Bird can't swallow frog that desperately holds onto its face

About thirty years ago, I saw this motivational poster for the first time, which became very well-known over time, hanging in my dad’s office. It had the words ‘never give up’ on it and above the words there was a cartoon picture of a frog, halfway down the throat of a stork, holding onto and closing the throat of the bird from the outside using its front feet, refusing to be swallowed. While exploring a remote wilderness area of the Kruger National Park, I came across a small pan and decided to stop and scan the area. There weren’t any animals around and all seemed quiet. Suddenly an erratic movement at the edge of the water caught my eye. I got my camera and zoomed in and realized it was a predatory bird called a hammerhead stork with a frog in its mouth. The bird was slapping the frog around, softening it up before usually swallowing it. I decided to stay a little to see how this was going to go down. In my mind this bird was going to swallow this frog any minute, which already looked half dead. I ended up sitting and filming the bird and the frog for over twenty minutes, thinking every time, ‘now is the time the hammerhead stork will gobble down its prey’. It didn’t happen. To my amazement I realized this frog might look all battered and half dead, but it was not going to give up that easily. I noticed the bird struggling to swallow the frog, then realising that every time the bird attempts to swallow the frog, the frog would suddenly come alive and grab onto the bird’s face and beak, making it impossible for the bird to swallow the frog. After watching and filming this frog grabbing onto the face and beak of the bird to stop it from being swallowed, the cartoon picture and motto of ‘never give up’ came straight to the top of my mind again after so many years. Funny how something so random can trigger memorable thoughts of many years ago.
