Footage has emerged of West Papuan separatists holding a New Zealand pilot hostage.

The video released on Tuesday February 14 shows a man believed to be the pilot Phillip Mark Mehrtens from Christchurch surrounded by rifle-wielding fighters from the West Papua National Liberation Army.

Phillip, a former Jet Star pilot, was captured on February 7 during a botched mission to evacuate workers in the Nduga regency following death threats from the separatists.

The armed group is part of the 'Free Papua Movement' calling for the independence of Papua from Indonesia.

Mohammad Mahfud, coordinating minister for political, security and legal affairs, said officials are working on the safe release of the hostage.
