The devastated mum of the Thai cave rescue boy who died in the UK said this morning she is wracked with grief over her son's passing.

Thanapron Phromthep said she has not slept since the sudden death on February 14 of football player Duangphet 'Dom' Phromthep, 17, following an 'accident' in Leicestershire.

Dom was one of the 13 survivors from the Wild Boars team who were trapped in the Tham Luang Nang Non Cave in Chiang Rai, northern Thailand, in 2018.

He was enrolled at the prestigious Brooke House College football academy in Market Harborough after being given a scholarship by the Zico Foundation.

The foundation announced Dom's death on February 15 without providing further details.

Thanapron and the grieving family, including Dom's grandparents, this morning made religious offerings of Dom's favourite food and drinks, as well as flowers, to monks, in accordance with Buddhist beliefs.

Devastated Thanapron said: 'It's been hard for us to sleep. We woke up at 2 am and prepared the food and incense for the monks.'

She added that she has spoken with Dom's friends from the Wild Boars, who agreed to help repatriate his body so proper Buddhist rites can be conducted in Thailand.

She said: 'I am grateful for Dom's friends. They have always loved and cared for each other dearly.'

Thanapron said the family were still unaware of how their son died. She said: 'We don't know. It's a shock, we're all still shocked. We have to accept what has happened and pray for him.

'I haven't slept. It's so hard for us.

'All of the parents of the other Wild Boars players have said they will help us bring Dom's body back.'

Duangphet was the former captain of the Wild Boars football team in Thailand. The group were rescued from the Tham Luang Cave in June 2018, following an intense mission that gripped the world.
