Cops close cannabis vending machine on Thai island
Police have seized a vending machine dispensing vapes and cannabis products outside a restaurant in Thailand.
Police Colonel Thanapong Phothi, superintendent of the Pattaya Police Station, led a team of cops to Koh Lan island near 'Sin City' Pattaya in Chonburi province on February 10.
They impounded the 1.5-metre-tall kiosk labelled '#HASHTAG' that glowed a bright neon pink outside the Tha Na Ban restaurant.
Instead of drinks or snacks, the vending machine instead offered a selection of 12 items, including a 'squirrel tail preroll' worth 280 THB (around 8 USD), a 'Pod Lana' vaping device worth 440 THB (13 USD) and a mystery 'Brown Paradise' cookie for 260 THB (around 7.7 USD), among others.
There was also a website label, www.Hashtag-th.com - which no longer appears to be functional.
Locals reported the vending machine fearing it might make cannabis more accessible to the youth and would undermine the island's image to tourists.
Cops are still tracking down the machine's owner.
Ministers in Bangkok removed cannabis from the list of narcotics in June last year leading to thousands of street stalls and shops opening around the country selling the plants.
Locals are also allowed to grow cannabis at home to use and sell but smoking recreationally in public is technically illegal - despite many people doing so at bars and cafes.
Officials hope the move will boost the country's economy through marijuana's links to agriculture, medicine and tourism, but opponents claim the shift could cause long-term metal health problems among people who use it regularly.
