Four were killed and 13 were injured after an explosion at an illegal DIY firecracker factory being run from a home in Indonesia.

The loud blast jolted residents in Karangbendo village in the Blitar Regency of East Java on February 19 evening.

CCTV footage captured the moment the explosion tore through buildings with a bright red flash erupting from the dark horizon.

The four occupants of the house were found dead at the scene.

Adjunct Senior Commissioner Argowiyono, Blitar City Police Chief, said:

"Based on the results of our investigation, it is suspected that the explosion occurred because it was triggered by a spark from a lit cigarette exposed to gunpowder. At that location, we found three pots filled with explosives and cigarette butts near the source of the explosion".

Officers added that those who lost their lives were not experienced manufacturers, and had tried to make a profit selling low-quality firecrackers in the weeks leading up to Ramadan and Eid celebrations.

The explosion also damaged around 26 neighboring homes within a 300-metre radius. 13 residents were injured, including a four-month-old infant whose condition is now stable, local media reported.
