Three battery-powered electric ferries catch fire in Thailand
Three battery-powered electric ferries caught fire in Thailand this morning.
The luxury boats were among 12 vessels moored at a private dock in Samut Prakan province. Their batteries were being charged when the blaze erupted on February 21 at 8 am local time.
Authorities dispatched five fire trucks, but crews had difficulty controlling the flames due to strong winds blowing through the area. The fire was brought under control after an hour.
An initial inspection found that three ferries had been damaged. There were no reports of casualties or injuries.
Witnesses said they heard a blast shortly before the fire broke out. Police believe a battery explosion may have caused it.
Officers said they will conduct further investigations into the cause of the inferno by interviewing the owner of the boats, which were each worth around 40 million Baht (1.15 million U.S. dollars).
