A 'drunk' motorbike rider was rescued after plunging into an open sewer hole during road works.

Nattawut Buaroy, 23, was travelling home after work when he plowed through the brightly lit construction barriers and tumbled down the hole in Samut Prakan province, Thailand, before dawn on February 19.

Construction workers and medics found him soaked in gray water down the 20-foot-deep pit. His left middle finger was broken, and he had a wound on his right collarbone.

The rescue mission took more than one hour since the only way down was through a fixed ladder. Responders lowered a stretcher into the hole and secured a profusely apologetic Nattawut on it before hoisting him back up to the road.

He was given first aid then taken to a hospital.

Sittisak Kunarak from the local engineering department said that the hole was for the Metropolitan Electricity Authority's electric cables.

He added: 'We will make him pay for the damage. There were bright warning signs and he rode straight through them.'

Meanwhile, Nattawut allegedly admitted that he had been drinking 'a little' before riding home.

Police said they will be interrogating Nattawut and gathering footage from security cameras to determine the cause of the accident.
