A Filipino woman has made a gown from 20,000 soda can tabs in a touching tribute to her late father.

Richell Malibiran, 43, spent her younger years happily collecting Coca-Cola bottles and drinks ring pulls with her dad in Batangas province, the Philippines.

Remembering her father who died in 2013, she began turning the special objects into amazing environmental-friendly shimmering aluminum dresses.

Footage shows the talented technical sergeant from the Philippine Air Force crocheting the coin-sized tabs together with string.

Speaking today, Richell said the gown has taken 12 months so far and still needs a few finishing touches before it is finished.

She said: ‘I really want to enter my work into the Guinness Book of Records to help the Philippines get recognition and encourage others to recycle.

'My dad will be so proud. Collecting the soda tabs was our special hobby.'

Richell said she has spent about five hours working on the gown each weekend while she is off-duty in the Air Force.

Two smaller-sized dresses were made by sticking the pieces together with a glue, but Richell innovated on the third and longest gown she made so far by tying them with crochet needles and yarn.

She said: ‘I did not expect that so many people would appreciate my work. I'm a Coca-Cola collector and recycling is part of my advocacy to protect mother Earth.

‘I inherited this trait from my siblings. My sister, a doll collector, also uses recycled materials when making dresses for her dolls.'

She added that they collected more pull tabs to exchange for a wheelchair for her sick father who later died.

She said: ‘I told him I would continue his collection and use them in exchange for a wheelchair. But the number needed for the tabs kept increasing every time we were nearing the quota.

‘So I bought my father a second-hand wheelchair instead and used the tabs collected to create my first gown as a way to remember him.'

Richell is now applying to the Guinness to break the record of most can tabs used in a dress.
