A hapless stray dog with its head stuck in a plastic container has been rescued by wildlife handlers in Thailand.

The female white mutt around three years old was found sleeping next to a road near a market in the Amphawa district of Samut Songkhram province on February 9.

Concerned locals called the animal rescuers fearing the dog may die as it had been roaming for days with the plastic helmet on its head, unable to drink, eat, or breathe properly.

Members of the Sapparachen Foundation rescue team searched for the dog and found it lying under shade near a home's gate.

The frightened pooch appeared too weak to struggle as rescuers pulled the container from its head. After being freed, it was given some food and drink before being vaccinated with an anti-rabies shot.

It was also spayed at the local livestock office. The team said they will take the dog to a shelter if no one comes forward to claim ownership.
