A deadly cobra crept up on a housewife while she prepared dinner on a patio.

The mother was cooking rice and carried a large pot while walking towards the stove when she noticed something moving near the plants in Bangkok, Thailand on February 18.

At first, she thought the figure was part of the water hose until the creature held its head high with its hood flared and ready to strike.

Footage shows the panicked mum fleeing while carrying the steel rice pot. Three loyal pet dogs quickly sprung up to ensure the venomous snake stayed in its place.

A few moments later, the scared housewife went back to the kitchen to check on the serpent and drove it away by throwing a bucket of water at it.

Her son Kongsak Taweesuksathien said: ‘My mum was terrified. She just ran away while carrying the heavy pot, hurting her ankles.'

The snake escaped into the canal beside the family's home and disappeared.

But Kongsak said his mother was still scared to be by herself if it returned to look for food.

He said: 'It didn't return so far, but she wouldn't be alone in the kitchen after that. She always had the dogs around whenever she cooks.'

Researchers found that 7,000 people are treated for snake bites each year in Thailand. Suchai Suteparuk from the Division of Toxicology at Chulalongkorn University reported that 30 of those die, with cobras being the biggest killer.
