Thames shipwreck timelapse on lowest tide of year in Kent, UK

An incredible timelapse has captured Thames shipwreck - SS Richard Montgomery - on the lowest tide of the year in Kent, UK this morning (February 22).

The wreck which lies 1.5 miles north of Sheerness in Kent, can be seen pictured here on both the lowest and highest equinoctial spring tide of the year, as predicted by National Tidal and Sea Level Facility (NTSLF) for Port of Sheerness.

An equinoctial tide occurs when the Sun is near equinox, resulting in larger than normal spring tides.

Timelapse footage at 30 second intervals shows the tide rising over a 6 hour period between low water at 8am and high water at 2pm local time.

The UK Gov is reportedly planning on having the three masts that can be seen above the waterline cut off this year, in order to reduce the risk of the wreck - which sank in 1944 with 1400 tonnes of explosives onboard - being accidently set off by one of the masts collapsing.
