Unlike snow, which falls as a small ice crystal throughout it's life cycle, and distinct from sleet, which is a water droplet that falls into a layer of cold air and freezes before it hits the ground, graupel also known as snow pellets, is a type of precipitation that forms when supercooled water droplets accumulate on a snowflake as it falls. This gives the soft snowflake a kind of ice shell around it, giving it a harder consistency than snow, making it bounce as it hits the ground and other objects, but still softer than the hard consistency of a sleet pellet.
