Experts are predicting another bumper crop of foul-smelling sargassum seaweed for South Florida this summer.

Satellite images show that a huge bloom of sargassum seaweed is developing in the central Caribbean. Ocean currents, including the Gulf Stream, transport the seaweed to the Caribbean islands, the Yucatan Peninsula and South Florida.

Footage captured on February 26 shows Delray Beach lined with the seaweed that gives off an unpleasant odour that is similar to rotten eggs.

Since 2011, the seaweed, that provides food and shelter for some sea life in moderate amounts, has covered beaches in thick mats that can harm wildlife, prevent sea turtle hatchlings from reaching the ocean, and discourage vacationers from booking rooms in ocean-front resorts. Some localities, like Delray Beach, Florida, which is shown in this video, are already dealing with a sargassum seaweed invasion. Delray Beach, like many communities, relies on tractors to rake the seaweed into the sand or collect it and deposit it along the dune line. Scientists suspect that nutrient-rich run-off from agricultural activities and warming seas due to climate change may be behind the growing sargassum seaweed problem.
