Hit-and-run driving instructor surrenders after horror crash that killed highway cop
A driving instructor has surrendered to police after a fatal hit-and-run that killed a policeman in Thailand.
Kittirat Ranprasit turned himself in to authorities in Pathum Thani province for the horror crash that ended Police Sergeant Setthakan Loikhampom's life on February 23.
The driver said he had parked his black Toyota Vios along a motorway to fish at a swamp when Setthakan, who was with the Highway Police Sub-division 8, confronted him and asked him to leave.
Fearing the officer might see the beer bottle and e-cigarette in his car, Kittirat hurriedly fled with the cop giving chase on his motorcycle.
Footage from Setthakan's camera shows the high-speed pursuit along the road, with Kittirat apparently ramming the Vios into Setthakan's motorcycle and injuring him gravely.
Witnesses told police they saw Kittirat fleeing the scene on foot with a black shirt. Highway workers found Setthakan dead with severe head wounds. The suspect's Vios had also been left behind.
Around two hours following the collision, Kittirat surrendered to Police Colonel Wanchana Thip-at, superintendent of the Highway Police Station Sub-Division 8.
While he was being escorted out of the Highway Police office, furious friends of the deceased descended on him. Officers intervened and took him to the Lam Luk Ka police station.
Police said they did not find alcohol or illegal drugs in Kittirat's system. He has been charged for murdering an officer on duty.
Setthakan's relatives have retrieved his remains and will be holding a funeral for him in Bangkok.
Before his death, Setthakan had also worked as an outrider for national police chief Police General Damrongsak Kittipraphat.
