Locals in Valencia, Spain, paint pigeons in neon colours as part of a competition.

The contest sees male pigeons pursue a single female, who is not painted, and the winner is the last remaining male.

"I was walking along in Spain when all of a sudden a flock of what I thought were brightly coloured parrots were flying at me and then landed near my feet. As I looked closer I realised that they were pigeons that had been painted with bright colours," the filmer told Newsflare.

They added: "Shortly behind the pigeons were men with walkie-talkies watching their every move. I asked what was happening and they said that it was a popular sport in Spain where the pigeons are released for around three hours as a test of stamina, the painted ones are all male and the non-painted one is a female."

This footage was captured on February 28.
