Authorities vow to fine residents who reserve parking spaces with objects in Thailand
Authorities have vowed to fine residents who illegally reserve parking spaces using objects in Thailand.
The military-run country's Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) recently warned the public that putting out traffic cones and other barriers to reserve parking spots in public areas was illegal under a 1992 cleanliness and orderliness act.
Despite being illegal, the practice is common among business and homeowners, and carries a fine of between 500 baht (14 USD) to 10,000 baht (around 289 USD), depending on the area.
Footage taken today shows how widespread the illegal practice is, with bars, hotels and shops among those using cones and metal barriers to keep spaces on public roads.
The CIB has encouraged locals to report such violations to law enforcers. Those who submit photo or video evidence are rewarded a 50 per cent share of the fines.
