Locals used a bamboo stepladder to save a stray dog stuck under a canal bridge.

Residents found the scared pooch whimpering on the base of the aqueduct, seemingly trapped in Samut Sakhon province, Thailand on February 28.

Without wasting time, the men borrowed tools from a neighbour and worked to save the animal in distress.

Footage shows the good Samaritan in white shirt climbing down the waterway using the ladder. He was urging the dog to walk up the bamboo structure with him but it was frightened.

The kind local then carried the dog up but slipped on the mossy concrete.

Drivers and neighbours who also came up to help held a rope down to him to hold onto it while he carried the dog up the ladder.

Onlooker Wanna Saengnapha said: ‘I was on my way to pick up my son from school when I saw the commotion. They were all so worried about the dog. I stayed until they finally rescued it.'

Wanna added the pooch was taken and adopted by the man wearing a white shirt.

She said: ‘He said the dog trusted him, so it didn't bite. They went home together.'
