Thousands of fish carcasses washed up on shores in Lake Maninjau, West Sumatra, after a storm battered the area.

The video recorded on March 2 shows large numbers of dead fish floating on the river's surface before washing ashore.

Due to the strong winds, fish in 124 cages belonging to one farmer all perished. The extreme weather saw local farmers suffer losses of up to billions of Indonesian rupiah.

One farmer named Yaser explained that the winds caused sulfur in the lake to rise seeing the fish run out of oxygen: "Fish die as a result of lake water mixed with balerang which is toxic to fish."

Extreme weather is currently hitting Lake Maninjau again. The storm's winds for the past two days have resulted in tens of tons of fish in Lake Maninjau including floating net cages (KJA) owned by residents floating on the surface of the lake.

The fish that farmers are supposed to be harvesting ahead of Eid al-Fitr but currently around 124 fish cages belonging to residents around the lake have died. Yaser, one of the keremba owners, said that the fish died due to the wind coming down from the arat, making the sulfur in the lake rise to the surface, causing the fish to run out of oxygen, resulting in many fish dying.

"Fish die as a result of lake water mixed with balerang which is toxic to fish. It's been three days since the average cage feast, many people have died," he said. Fish die en masse in floating cages in lakes observed almost every year.

Currently farmers are waiting for the weather to improve to return to cultivating fish again, because currently the weather is not good enough to spread the seeds again. "Fish should be harvested before Eid, but now all the fish are dead," he said.
