Burning Everglades Sugarcane Fields May Cause Health Hazard to Nearby Residents

Buy video

Every year, sugarcane producers burn thousands of acres of sugarcane fields during the harvest season. The producers say burning sugarcane is necessary to make harvesting the crop more efficient and affordable. Some local residents who are banding together in an opposition group called "Stop the Burn" say ash and smoke generated by the fires is giving them serious health problems, such as asthma, cancer and heart disease. The sugarcane industry assures the residents -- many of whom live in underprivileged communities -- that the practice is safe. It's interesting to note, however, that Florida law bans burning during periods when the ash and smoke will impact wealthy communities, such as Wellington in Palm Beach County. "Stop the Burn" members say there is a greener way than burning to harvest sugarcane that's already being used by some operations. Here's a link to the group's site: https://stopsugarburning.org/stop-the-burn/
