Lawyers in London stage demonstration for activists facing prison for mentioning climate change in court
A group of lawyers, led a demonstration outside Inner London Crown Court as cases for two climate change activists from organisation Insulate Britain were due to be heard that day (March 3).
The concern from the lawyers came from the inconsistancy activists are dealt within court rooms, challenging the decision from some judges to charge defendants in contempt of court for speaking about climate change as their motivation for protest.
Former barrister Tim Crossland, of the Plan B legal climate organisation, says ahead of the protest that the 'British courts are deeply conflicted by climate protest.'
He argues that the jury is being denied the opportunity to hear the full evidence as to why individuals have resorted to such measures in the face of a climate catastrophe.
Later that afternoon, Judge Silas Reid handed out the two activists, 7-week custodial sentences for being in contempt of court.
