Moving Schwitters Merz Barn Wall
Kurt Schwitters was a German artist who worked in several genres and media, including what came to be known as installation art. One of his most famous installations was the end wall of the Merz Barn in Langdale, Cumbria.
In the 60's Artist Richard Hamilton, undertook the task of removing this artwork and it was taken to Newcastle to the Hatton Gallery for preservation.
Since the barn wall was rather fragile it had to be moved all in one piece, and a metal lifting frame was welded in place around the barn end wall to allow it to be lifted out in one section. Lowered horizontally onto a pantechnicon the wall was then transported to Newcastle.
Now some 50 years later the children at Langdale CofE Primary school re-enacted moving the Merz Barn wall, shifting a full sized replica down the grounds of the Cylinders Estate in Langdale, where the original barn stands.
