This is the awkward moment a family held a lively 18th birthday parter next to a wake in the Philippines.

The contrasting events were held simultaneously at the same venue in the neighbourhood of Mambaling in Cebu City, Cebu province on January 7.

Footage shows the coming-of-age birthday party, also known as a debut party, happening in full swing, with catering and loud music to entertain guests while grieving residents sat solemnly in a nearby tent.

One gazebo was adorned with colourful balloons and lights, while the other housed funeral wreaths and candles instead.

Kevin Montebon, the debutante's make-up artist, said: 'The family called me on the big day, so I rushed to the venue from work. In the middle of the event, I went backstage to re-touch her face, but I was shocked that there was a wake happening right next to us.'
