A venomous snake was found in a nursery after staff originally mistook it for a TOY.

A teacher at Coombabah on the Gold Coast, Australia, went to fetch something from one of the children’s Bluey bags.

When she pulled it out she spotted the curled-up serpent behind it on the shelf.

She thought it was just a toy snake to start with but then saw it breathing.

Snake-catcher Tim Hudson found the red-bellied black snake curled up in a classroom cubby hole.

Red-bellied black snakes are one of eastern Australia's most commonly encountered snakes.

Their bites are not fatal but can be very painful.

They can lead to nausea, vomiting, headaches, and abdominal pain.

Tim said “Teachers mentioned the children were having a nap around 2 pm.

“As some began to wake, one of the teachers went to get something out of a Bluey backpack in the cubby hole only to see a curled-up sleeping snake.

“At first they assumed it was a toy, but when they noticed it breathing they quickly realised it was real.

“They called the local Gold Coast Snake Catcher, Hudson Snake Catching and secured the area with all the doors shut and towels rolled up to block the doors.

“Our catcher was then advised where the snake was resting and we were able to safely catch and relocate the unwanted reptile.

“This catch occurred recently at Coombabah on the Gold Coast.”
