Rorqual With Crooked Spine Filmed Struggling Off Spanish Coast In Cullera, Valencia, Spain

Video footage captured off the coast of Cullera, Valencia, Spain, on March 4, 2023, shows a 40-tonne rorqual whale with a severe spinal deformity.
The whale was spotted swimming poorly due to its condition and was approached by veterinarians and biologists from the Oceanografic de Valencia. Despite not being entangled in a net, the whale was found to have scoliosis, a sideways curvature of the spine.
The rorqual later headed out to open sea, but experts warn it may reappear due to its general condition and swimming difficulties. The common rorqual is considered a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
