A stray dog drowning in a 9ft-deep well was rescued in Thailand.

The pooch was heard crying by residents who found it neck-deep in the dirty water at an abandoned hole in Surat Thani province on January 31.

When rescuers arrived, they saw the exhausted creature using its front limbs while desperately trying to mount the walls and keep itself afloat.

Footage shows the pooch submerged in dirty water as a volunteer did his best to lasso its body and lift it up.

Rescuer Phongsakorn Chaitham said: ‘I felt sorry for the dog. It was drifting there for at least two hours.

‘But the dog was strong enough and survived. It did not have any injuries although it was really tired.'

The pooch was cleaned and fed after it was successfully carried out of the well.

Rescuer Phongsakorn said: ‘The villagers would take care of the dog now. The well was covered too so no other strays could fall.'
