Two people were killed while three others are missing after a raft sank while crossing a river in Thailand.

The villagers had taken the raft to cross the Mun river in Ubon Ratchathani province to see a concert. After the show ended, some 30 people rode it back home when it capsized allegedly due to being overloaded.

The raft sank some 200 metres from the riverbank, with five people going missing after the accident.

Rescuers were notified at 1:30 AM on March 9 to launch a search. Two diving units and several volunteers were dispatched to comb the river, and initially found the body of an eight-year-old boy underwater.

The other missing people were identified as Jirawan Yimchang, 31, Nuengsakda Pansao, 41, Tengnueng Pansao, 11, and Chatchai Chaphuthorn, 31.

They later found the remains of Jirawan at around 9:23 AM. Worried relatives broke down as officers brought her lifeless body ashore. Jirawan's corpse was taken to the Sirindhorn Hospital for a post-mortem exam.

Police believe the raft capsized as there were too many people onboard.

The search in continuing for the missing locals.
