Artist who decorated home with elaborate graffiti branded 'embarrassing' by passerby
A wacky artist who uses her rental home as a blank canvas to produce incredible colourful installations has been accused of "polluting the environment".
Carmen Croxall, 35, spends hours dressing up her terrace in elaborate themes, currently boasting a giant Easter bunny and huge daffodil sculptures ready for Easter.
The mum-of-two has even transformed the outside of the two-bedroom property in Alphington, Devon, with chocolate bricks in a project which set her back almost £900.
But despite wowing her fans on Instagram with the flamboyant displays, she has recently come under fire from a passer-by who branded her home "embarrassing", and compared the artwork to graffiti.
The unnamed man, who stopped to chat and shared his views on camera, said: “I think you ought to know that not everyone thinks it’s as amazing as you do.
“It’s graffiti isn’t it, it’s like polluting the environment.
“I feel embarrassed about it when I go past. My wife is in the WI and they all talk about it, they all talk about this ‘crazy woman, oh have you seen what she’s put up recently?”
Carmen’s creations have previously included a gingerbread house and a Valentine’s Love Heart theme, which featured giant tubes of sweets in a sprinkle effect on the ground below.
It means her home stands out from the crowd amongst the other properties on her street, appearing more like a film set due to the huge coloured props she designs.
Her home has become something of a tourist attraction recently, with people coming to see her amazing installations - including a local care home that brought residents to it on a minibus.
And since the footage, Carmen has seen an outpouring of support on TikTok and even gained 20,000 new followers from those in support of her designs.
Carmen, a professional prop designer, said: “I’m absolutely fine online because you can control when you look at negative comments, but on the day I was not in the right frame of mind for it and cried for ages afterwards.
“There have been lots of positives to it though, some people have told me that they have discovered and loved my artwork because they saw this video, so that’s a really good thing.
“I’ve always known that there will be some people that don’t like the house, but it was just how unnecessary the comments were that was upsetting at the time.”
Carmen has been a prop maker for eleven years, and her job has included making giant theatre masks for Britain’s Got Talent, and even a giant Victoria Sponge for a Peter Andre Children In Need campaign.
The latest installation cost £898.50 to create and includes materials including twelve jugs, metres of fabric, cable ties, ducktape and polypropylene sheets.
After the installation is over Carmen hopes to sell the giant daffodils to make the money back.
Carmen added: “I made sure the daffodils were made really well too. I also had help here and there from friends and family. Sewing the roof took five hours. Making the daffodils took over a week,
“I am lucky enough I can make everything at work, as I own a prop-making business and I manage to combine my personal project with my work responsibilities.
“As my job is product design and social media marketing I sort of live and breathe making and decorating so I don’t really finish or start work every day.
“My landlord doesn’t say much. I emailed him about my gingerbread house and he didn’t reply so assumed it was ok.
“He called and came over in December to check the boiler and I was so worried as I wasn’t 100 per cent sure he knew, but he did. He is ok as long as I stay long term, pay my rent and put everything back to the way it was, apart from the 12-foot summer house I built in the garden, I said he can keep that!”
Carmen added: “The community as a whole is totally amazing, I often post in a community forum with updates and everyone comments with the most amazing things, it makes me so happy. They even help out too.
“Also because I have pink hair people recognise me out and about in my local area, and some people stop and speak to me or wave. Whenever I was outside my gingerbread house people would slow down in their cars to say hello.”
