China's Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) might be a stepping stone to a future of abundant, clean power.

The nuclear fusion reactor is at the Hefei Institute of Physical Science and is being operated on behalf of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Hefei in eastern China's Anhui Province.

The fully superconducting Tokamak device works by adding small amounts of the hydrogen isotopes deuterium or tritium into the reactor's vacuum chamber, using a transformer to create a plasma, then increasing its density and temperature until it undergoes a fusion reaction.

Fusion can produce enormous energy and is the reaction that powers the Sun.

Among the breakthroughs the device has achieved, in November 2018 EAST achieved plasma operation of 100 million degrees celsius.

This footage was filmed and produced on 11 March 2023.
