Buddhist monks and devotees tested their faith by walking on burning embers during a ceremony at a temple on a mountain in western Tokyo on Sunday 12 March.

The annual Hiwatari-sai (Hiwatari ceremony) is held at the Takao-san (Takao mountain) Yakuo-in Yuki-ji temple, commonly known as Yakuo-in.

It is located in Hachioji, a city that is technically part of western Tokyo thanks to the Japanese capital's unusual official shape, that stretches far further to the west than any other direction.

With bare feet, monks walked over hot coals while praying for world peace, protection from misfortune, and good health.

At the end of the ceremony visitors were also permitted to take part, which the faithful believe brings benefits to them too.

The annual event takes place on the second Sunday of March at the base of Mount Takao.
