A lone buffalo managed to fight off 15 lions and three hippos before escaping from a river to safety.

Abdelrahman Hassanein was leading a tour through Maasai Mara national reserve, Kenya, when a pride of predators singled out a big meal.

Dramatic footage shows the buffalo throw two lions off its back while running away from them and to the presumed safety of some nearby water.

Having withstood a one-hour-long siege from the lions, the buffalo then came head to head with a trio of massive hippos.

Incredibly the buffalo used its horns to fend off the angry hippos before safely clambering out of the water and away from the double danger.

Abdelrahman said: “I’ve been guiding in Maasai Mara for five years and have seen many hunts but never anything like the siege this buffalo endured.

“The lions chased it down but he managed to make it into the water where it then came face to face with the hippos.

“Over almost 90 minutes the buffalo stood its ground and managed to escape with no serious injuries.

“The lions broke the siege to catch a zebra – which they also missed – so the buffalo managed to get out of the water and to safety.”
