Locals are making a handsome profit selling fish nets in Thailand's 'village of fish net weavers'.

Bundles of colourful trawling nets hung like curtains outside homes in Khon Kaen province's Ban Kok Soong village.

The area has earned its reputation as a fish net-making captial of the country as more than 200 households are said to have been weaving the items for more than 30 years.

Among the practitioners of the craft are Kularb Kamhongsa, 51, and her husband, who started out as freelancers before setting up their own business.

She said they first gathered experience before establishing their shop.

She said: 'When we became skilled enough, we decided to create our own store since there was a lot of demand from Khon Kaen and nearby provinces.'

They cater to walk-in customers, but also have made-to-order options that can be shipped nationwide, with prices varying depending on the size and material of the nets.

Kularb said they earn around 20,000 to 30,000 baht (570 to 857 USD) per month by selling around five to six nets a day, adding their buyers are increasing as fishing and travel restrictions have been eased in Thailand following the pandemic.

Another store owner Nipha Sudchanham, 60, said she has been making fishing nets for more than 30 years.

She claimed her shop is famous for its high-quality and durable nets, with a regular stream of orders and inquiries coming daily.
