Diving instructor Jacques de Klerk filmed as he set free three sea turtles that were entangled in ghost fishing nets.

Captured off the island of Bathalaa on January 19, the footage shows de Klerk racing to cut free the trapped olive ridley sea turtles.

The diver said: "I was walking to the beach to scout diving conditions for the day as the wind was blowing the night before.

"As I reached the water I noticed the ghost net (a discarded fishing net)
with some creature flapping and trying to escape.

"I ran and fetched my snorkelling gear and knife.

"When I reached the net to my surprise there were three olive ridley turtles entangled. I released two without serious injury they swam off just fine. The one I saved for last was in worse shape.

"She was struggling to get breaths missing one fin and many cuts and scratches.

"After the rescue, the team from the dive centre and marine biologists assisted in getting the turtle to Marine savers Maldives.

"She is currently doing great recovering with other rescued turtles at this great rehabilitation centre."
