Conservationist speaks on Oscar-winning Indian elephant documentary they featured in
The Elephant Whisperers, directed by Kartiki Gonsalves and produced by Guneet Monga, has won Best Documentary Short Subject at the 95th Academy Awards. The Elephant Whisperers, set in the Mudumalai National Park, is the tale of an orphaned elephant calf named Raghu in the care of Bomman and Belli, an indigenous couple. The documentary celebrates not just the bond that develops between them as well as the natural beauty of their surroundings.
With stunning visuals of Tamil Nadu's nature, ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ tells the story of this loving and heartwarming relationship and earned an Oscar nomination in the documentary short film category. Running at 41 minutes, this short documentary movie explores the tentative yet precious bond between Raghu, an orphaned baby elephant, and his caretakers - a mahout couple named Bomman and Bellie - who devote their lives to protect him from poachers and raise him.
On speaking about this Bomman the caretaker of the elephant calf says "I am a mahout in Mudumalai. I was informed about the orphaned elephant calf and its poor condition by the forest department staffs. I just went and saw that and it was having worms in its wounds and it was really in a bad state. I said to the officials that i will take it to Mudhumalai and treat it there. Then I took the calf and treated it with great love and care. I looked the calf like a child and I never found it difficult. Ragu was responding positively for the treatments and then we were given another orphaned elephant Ammu. Both the elephant calfs were showered with lots of love and care. And our children Ragu and Ammu (Elephant calfs) also developed a strong bonding with us. We felt so hard to bid adieu to the calfs as they cant able to live with us any more. I cried a lot when I handed our children to them . Even my wife cant able to eat food for days thinking on the elephant calves.
I was said that the documentary won Oscar awards. And now its because of the director of the film. I am really happy for the award. Forest officials are also equally happy for the award and i am Bommai speaking".
