Millipedes are infesting Indonesia's Pesisir Barat Regency, Lampung Province, causing business disruptions and concerns among residents. The cause of the infestation is unknown.

Although the species, Harpaphe haydeniana, is not venomous, a massive spread of these animals in residential areas is believed to be a threat to humans and the environment.

When threatened, this millipede exudes hydrogen cyanide that can be lethal to birds and rodents, and cause temporary skin reactions in humans.

For the past three months, locals have been using insecticides to prevent millipedes from entering their houses. But this hasn't stopped Harpaphe haydeniana from infesting their homes.

Residents of Pesisir Barat Regency have bow called on local authorities to handle the pest. So far, there has been no specific response from the local government.

Harpaphe haydeniana originates from North America. This millipede can grow up to 3 cm, has 20 pairs of legs, and is usually dark-coloured.
