Coloured powder was shot from coaches into crowds of thousands in Indore as the Indian city celebrate the Hindu festival of Rang Panchami on March 12.

Around 600,000 attended the festival which marks the start of spring and the new crop season.

Hoses sprayed water mixed with coloured powder into the jubilant crowds.

Over 600,000 people attended the Grand Rangpanchami celebrations in Indore when the city’s hosted the traditional Gair festival on Sunday. The administration and the people of the city are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the event is a success and that the Gair finds a place on the UNESCO list.

Indore has its own style of celebrating Rang Panchami. Here, it is celebrated like Dulendi, but colors are mixed with water and then poured on others. At the event of the festival, the local municipal corporation today sprinkled color mixed water on the main streets of old Indore.

Gulal (Color mixed powders) was blown up to 100 feet from a machine and a tricolor was made from gulal. People were welcomed to the Gair with a shower of colors and water from water tankers. Six water missiles fired a total of 40,000 liters of color-mixed water from the tankers. The procession started from Srijan Sangam Corner and reached the Gaurakund intersection where a large number of people celebrated the festival by dancing and sprinkling colors on others. Around 350 volunteers were deployed to take care of the entire work.
