This is the shocking moment a 10-year-old giant panda named Ya Yi at Guangzhou Zoo drank soda from a bottle that was dropped into her enclosure.

The video was filmed in the city of Guangzhou in Guangdong Province on March 12.

Ya Yi was seen picking up a bottle, opening its lid and licking the liquid inside before playing with it as a toy.

Guangzhou Zoo officials confirmed that Ya Yi had not shown any signs of illness following the incident and they have taken the bottle away.

Nonetheless, staff at the Panda Research and Exchange Centre in the city of Fuzhou warned that pandas have strict standards for water consumption and that drinking soda could be detrimental to their health.

The video has sparked outrage online as some netizens have criticised visitors for their irresponsible behaviour. It remains unclear who dropped the soda bottle into the enclosure.

According to experts, the diet of captive pandas consists mainly of bamboo but also includes minced meat and vegetables as well as vitamins and minerals.

While a small amount of soda may not cause harm to the panda, excessive consumption could lead to bloating.

The video was provided by the filmer named A Jing.
