Billionaire fraud suspect's $32 million Manhattan apartment engulfed in flames during FBI search hours after arrest
A Chinese billionaire fraud suspect's $32 million Manhattan apartment burst into flames on March 15 as FBI agents were combing the place for evidence hours after arresting its owner on suspicion of a $1 billion scam.
Guo Wengui's 18th-floor home in New York's iconic Sherry-Netherland Hotel was consumed by flames shortly after midday Wednesday, about six hours after Wengui -- a close friend of Steve Bannon -- was arrested.
Agents are probing whether the blaze was linked to Wengui's arrest. But they've yet to offer further details, including whether it was triggered by a booby trap designed to destroy evidence.
The two-alarm fire burned for several hours before it was brought under control and FDNY crews performed safety checks.
