This is the terrifying moment a surging mudslide flowed through roads in Peru.

Dramatic footage shows the debris-filled torrent raging through the Cieneguilla district of Lima on March 14.

Terrified residents rushed to move their belongings out of the way as the flood sent waves of rubbish toward them.

District Mayor Emilio Chavez said more than 2,500 families in the area had been affected.

Cyclone Yaku has been battering swathes of northern Peru since March 12, leaving at least eight people dead.

A state of emergency has been declared over 400 districts as the government distributes aid to affected locals.

Peru's National Institute of Civil Defense said at least 58 people have died since the start of the rainy season.
