A German tourist has died after plunging from the world's seventh-tallest hotel.

Raphael Deutsch, 26, reportedly fell from a balcony on the Baiyoke Tower II in Bangkok at around 9:30 AM on March 16.

He was said to have been staying on the 12th floor and was seen smoking cannabis and drinking alcohol on Wednesday evening before the fall.

Police said it is believed he was intoxicated when he fell.

Lieutenant General Wittayakarn Suvannaruengsri, the Deputy Superintendent of the Phaya Thai district station, said: 'The tourist fell from a balcony ledge. He was lying down on the balcony and fell to the ground.

'The cause cannot be determined whether it is from drugs or not. We have to wait for the results of the autopsy from the doctor first.

'There were witnesses who said that the tourist was drinking the evening before and smoking.

'He was already dead when officers arrived at the building.'

Baiyoke Tower II is an 88-storey hotel and office block in Bangkok's Ratchathewi district.

The 309-metre (1,014 ft) high skyscraper was the tallest building in Thailand from 1997 to 2016 before the King Power MahaNakhon was built.

The building's in-house hotel was also the tallest hotel in the world until 1999, when the Burj Al Arab in Dubai was completed. Currently, it is the tallest hotel in Southeast Asia and the seventh highest in the world.
