This shocking footage shows schoolchildren in Simferopol, the second-largest city in the Crimean Peninsula, receiving a military training course.

The clip, which was shared by Russian state-owned domestic news agency RIA Novosti Crimea, features images of minors managing what appear to be rifles and joining hand-to-hand combat.

Dmytro Lubinets, the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, confirmed the veracity of this story on Telegram.

These courses teach children a range of military skills, including martial arts, drills, and weapon use. It has been reported that over 60 minors, including those from kindergarten, are currently enrolled in these programmes.

Despite the instructors claiming that the training is aimed at helping pupils to defend themselves in emergencies, rather than promoting violence, the introduction of such programmes has sparked concerns and indignation. It is believed to be yet another effort to indoctrinate Russians into the war in Ukraine.

BBC News Moscow Bureau senior journalist Will Vernon tweeted that the pilot program will be implemented in the country's secondary schools later this year.
