A hero resident saved a wild bird he found drowning in a well.

The passerby heard strange splashing sounds at the back of his home in Surat Thani province, Thailand, when he discovered the creature on March 14.

He saw the greater coucal flapping its wings in the water as it fought to swim out of the waterhole.

Footage shows the bird's saviour Naruechai Chamnonghan fishing the creature out to safety as it struggled to float around the well.

Naruechai said: ‘The bird was exhausted when I found it. It could die if I were a bit late.'

The house owner took the bird to his kitchen and wiped its drenched body with a towel.

It was given a temporary nest of old clothes while waiting for its feathers to dry.

Naruechai added: ‘The bird did not resist. It seemed to understand that I was trying to help.

'It left on its own and the bird was gone in the morning. I will put a cover on the well so it doesn't happen again.'
