Despite the dreary weather, the annual St. Patrick's Day (March 17) Parade in Belfast brought together people from all walks of life to honour the patron saint and showcase their love for Irish heritage. With floats, bands, dancers and performers displaying their talents, the parade was a vibrant and festive affair that drew thousands of onlookers, many of whom sported green clothing and flags. And while the event has traditionally been associated with the Nationalist community, recent years have seen a growing diversity of attendees from both sides of the community, uniting in their appreciation for this joyous occasion.

Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, Belfast, 17 March, 2023

The annual Belfast St. Patrick’s Day Parade, held to honour the patron saint and celebrate Irish culture, commenced this year at about 1.30 pm from the City Hall. The parade, with the Lord Mayor, Councillor Christina Black at its head, travelled through the city centre along Chichester Street, Victoria Street, Castle Place and Donegall Place, concluding at the City hall.

It was a dull day and the forecast light rain arrived when the parade reached roughly the halfway point. It didn't, however, dampen the atmosphere.

In previous years the parade would leave from the City Hall and conclude at Custom House Square, where a concert was held. However this year the concert was held the evening before.

The parade displayed a diverse range of floats, bands, dancers and performers who contributed to the vibrant and festive atmosphere that characterises the event. Thousands of individuals, many adorned in green clothing and waving flags lined the parade route.

While in the past the St. Patrick’s Day festivities may have been regarded by some as an event leaning more towards the Nationalist community, recent years have seen a shift, with people from various backgrounds and both sides of the community attending and enjoying the celebrations.
