Spectacular wet snow avalanche in the Swiss Alps but luckily no victims

Despite the lack of snowfall this winter, a recent dusting of snow in higher elevations prompted the SLF Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research to issue an orange-level alert for some regions. Unfortunately, Friday's (March 17) warm temperatures, well above the seasonal average, only increased the risk of wet-heavy snow avalanches. Just two days prior, a skier had been killed by an avalanche in the Valais valley, near Nendaz ski resort.

While hiking in Derborence valley, one adventurer witnessed a powerful avalanche cascading down the opposite mountain and quickly grabbed their camera to capture the dramatic event. With the threat of more avalanches on the horizon, it's important to stay vigilant and heed any warnings or alerts issued by local authorities.
