Authorities have launched a Singaore-style free hawker centre for street vendors in a desperate attempt to tidy up the notoriously messy pavements in Bangkok.

Footage shows food stalls selling barbecued meat, snacks, drinks, and desserts outside the Samyan Mitrtown development compound in the Thailand capital.

The new street food hotspot called Hello Habre opened to customers on February 1 this year. A ceremony was held the next day headed by Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt.

Pathum Wan district office, with the help of the private developer, allocated the space to help the business owners increase accessibility.

The project aimed to create an organised commercial area and relocate street vendors on the public sidewalks so pedestrians could travel conveniently without trolleys blocking their paths and junk left on the slabs.

Food, clothing, and other stores in the area have been certified for safety by the district office.

Rising politician Chadchart, who won the prestigious post last yer, said: ‘This activity will help vendors to have more commercial areas while also improving their quality of life.

‘I hope more private sectors will join this activity because it does not require much space or construction. It only uses an area beside the building.'

Sanitised city-state Singapore, which has boomed as a global financial centre thanks to British Colonial development, shifted all of its street food vendors into dedicated hawker centres in order to keep its streets clean.
