Mission golden-eyed tree frogs, species native to the Amazon, explained
Video from March 2023 shows the Schoenbrunn Zoo in Vienna, Austria celebrating the successful breeding of mission golden-eyed tree frogs' offspring native to the Amazon after a years-long pause.
The species are also known as the blue milky frog because of the milky fluid they excrete when stressed is native to the Amazon Rainforest in South America. It is especially familiar for its exceptionally loud calls, comparable to the sound of a car horn.
The head of the zoo's Zoological Department, Anton Weissenbacher, says the following:
"The mission golden-eyed tree frog is particularly exciting because it lives in the treetops of tropical rainforests in the Amazon region.
"It uses water-filled tree cavities at a height of up to 30 meters to lay its eggs.
"The people there hardly ever see it. They only know him from his loud calls. The males have two extraordinarily large acoustic sacs."
With amphibians being the most threatened animal class on a global scale, the zoo emphasized the importance of building a stable reserve of such populations outside of their natural habitat. They added that a decline in population is to be expected due to the progressive deforestation of the Amazon rainforest.
"In the global amphibian crisis, it is the task of zoological gardens to draw attention to the many fascinating representatives of amphibians and to build up stable reserve populations outside of their natural habitat in good time," said Weissenbacher.
The zoo revealed that their two female mission golden-eyed tree female frogs have produced a total of 520 offspring ever since they arrived from the Zurich Zoo in Switzerland in 2021.
The majority of them have been relocated to different zoos around the globe.
