This is the heart-breaking moment a lion pride stole a buffalo’s newborn baby before leaping on to her back and bringing her down too.

Benson Nashula was leading a tour through Olkeju Rongai, Kenya, on March 2 when he came across a buffalo that was just about to give birth surrounded by a group of predators.

Tear jerking footage shows the mother heroically fight off the lions before the numbers advantage became too much and they managed to grab her calf.

One of the male’s then leapt on to the buffalo’s back and using his immense power forced her to the ground where she was overwhelmed by the rest of the lionesses.

Benson said: “I have been a guide for 10 years but circle of life never gets any easier to watch.

“I know this is Mother Nature’s way but the buffalo fought bravely.

“The pride had been following a herd of about 200 buffaloes before they focussed on this pregnant one.

“She had just given birth when the lions attacked. In total it took 30 minutes for them to overwhelm her and that wasn’t until the male got involved.”
