Climate change: Indonesia inaugurates the operation of a 100-meter IG3IS meteorological sensor tower to monitor greenhouse gasses
The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) inaugurated a greenhouse gas tower to monitor greenhouse gas concentrations as an effort to mitigate global climate change.
Footage was filmed at the Global Atmospheric Watch (GAW) Station at Kototabang, Agam District, West Sumatra Province during the peak of commemoration of the 73rd World Meteorology Day on March 20.
"Human activities result in CO2 or carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. This tower produces data that can be calculated. This is the importance of building an Integrated Global Greenhouse Gas Information System (IG3IS) tower to monitor GHG trends," BMKG head Dwikorita Karnawati said during the ceremonial inauguration of the tower's operation.
Tower IG3IS is 100 meters high in Kototabang and equipped with meteorological sensors that function to monitor at three altitude points -- at 30 meters, 70 meters, and 100 meters.
Monitoring of greenhouse gases from the tower illustrates the profile of greenhouse gases at different heights; it is a form of Indonesia's contribution to the IG3IS Program.
"The increase in greenhouse gas monitoring capacity through IG3IS will be used further in developing modeling for greenhouse gas emissions as complementary information for national greenhouse gas inventories, especially for estimating global stocktake which achieves one of the targets of the Paris Agreement in 2030," Dwikorita added.
The commemoration of World Meteorological Day also plays a video statement by the Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Patteri Taalas.
