The Thai dish 'Patongo' or 'Pa thong ko' has been named among the best street dessert foods by online travel and food guide TasteAtlas.

The delicious deep-fried dough snack placed fourth on the TasteAtlas's list of 'best fried dough foods' and fifth on the 'best street food sweets' rankings in February.

The cruller-like dessert is similar to Chinese doughnuts called youtiao. Strips of dough are pinched together and deep-fried in oil until they are golden, puffy, and crispy.

A carbohydrate-rich dish, patongo is commonly eaten for breakfast along with condensed milk, custard, or coffee. However, health experts have warned against eating too much of it due to its oiliness and high sodium content.

Patongo vendors reported increased sales after the local treat was featured on TasteAtlas.

The Pathongko Station 2017, a shop in Narathiwat province in the south of the cuntry, said it was selling around 5,000 baht (around 146 USD) worth of patongo per day.

While patongo vendor Ko-pe said his store in Trang province has also been seeing more customers.

Last February, TasteAtlas named Thai iced tea as the seventh-best non-alcoholic drink in the world.
