It’s a bum-pecker, not a woodpecker! What is this young Gull doing with the Swan’s backside?

Silver Gulls (Chroicocephalus novaehollandiae) are common in coastal and inland Australia. This immature Gull was on a mud flat next to a dozing immature Black Swan (Cygnus atratus), and suddenly began gently pecking at the Swan’s feathered backside. I have no idea why – perhaps it was removing bird lice to eat? After a while the Swan became annoyed and lunged at the Gull, who retreated. The Swan went back to rest, and the young Gull returned, and began pecking and preening the Swan again, not disturbing it this time. This video was shot at the Busselton Bird Hide on the Vasse River in Western Australia.
