A city bordering Thailand and Malaysia was flooded following heavy rain on Thursday evening.

The Betong District in Yala province saw one-metre-deep floods as a tropical storm battered the region for more than two hours on March 23.

The resulting deluge from overflowing sewage pipes submerged the Kongka and Nakarat Bamrung roads, and entered homes and shops.

The filthy water receded slowly as the deluge overwhelmed local drainage systems.

Garage owner Woraphot Polpakdee said some of his properties and appliances had been damaged by the flood.

He said mechanics had helped him move customers' cars and his equipment to higher ground, while also digging drainage ditches to keep the water from rising.

Thongchai Theprot, acting mayor of the Betong Municipality, said the town has been hit with heavy rain for the past couple of days.

He said local authorities were preparing for possible flash floods and landslides at risky areas near waterways.

Thongchai has asked residents to move their belongings to higher ground, and to prepare for possible evacuations.
